ANIMAL WELFARE AWARENESS SESSION AT CITYLAND COLLEGE MATUGGA

The Animal Welfare Awareness session was a one-day session that took place at Cityland College Matugga on Friday 27th June 2025. The session ran from 3:30pm to 4:40pm. The targeted audience were the students and staff at the school. There was an attendance of 120 participants (both students and staff).

The presentation was spearheaded by Dr. Vanessa Katabazi who introduced the concept and different aspects of animal welfare to the audience. The session entailed a variety of animal welfare concepts including what animal welfare is, our responsibility as humans in ensuring that good animal welfare practices are upheld. In the various homesteads and communities that we live in.

After a very informative session, there was an audience participation session that included a Q and A session, animal welfare myths and facts and having an overview of what the audience had learnt out of the session.

We concluded the session by suggesting ways in which the students would actively participate in animal welfare improvement efforts where an animal welfare club formation was mentioned and the day was finalized with foundational steps of starting up the club and having it up and running by the end of August 2025.

What went well?

A somewhat large audience was reached despite some students having been absent due to an academic seminar that was organised prior to the session. The students showed interest in the main topic and this was evident by the attention and questions asked in the Q & A session. The questions asked reflected the fact that the students internalised and understood the concept of Animal Welfare and how it is applied in their day-to-day life.

The participants appreciated the knowledge obtained and promised to apply the different aspects of animal welfare in their daily life- at school and at home.

What didn’t go well?

The candidate classes and A-level students were unable to attend the session due to prior engagements that could not be changed.

Practical sessions for animal care and handling are required for the participants to better appreciate the animal welfare concept in practice.
